Sam Louis – 8 Ball Album Review

Tim Marshall

Alt Rock/Emo Rock pop artist Sam Louis has recently a new album called ‘8 Ball’ and it doesn’t disappoint!

Sam Louis is a Canadian singer-songwriter and emotional curator based out of Toronto. Sam brings his listeners songs that touch on introspective themes of mental health, inner struggles, and acting on impulse. Louis is a talented dark alt-pop artist whose trap-like melodies follow along with the theme of loss and regret, bringing euphoric yet dark choruses to the listener.

In the future, Sam wants to continue pushing boundaries and breaking barriers in the music industry.

The 5 tracks on the album I’ll be featuring on this review are, ‘Faded Jeans’, ‘Like A Drug’, ‘Burnout’, ‘Legacy’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Be Saved’

The 2nd track on the album is ‘Faded Jeans’, which to me is a emo pop rock anthem in the making, and should be up there with the likes of Lil Used and King Theta, albeit not quite the pop punk sound they have, however there’s definitely something similar to those artists within the structure and vocals on this track.

‘Like A Drug’ is something completely different to ‘Faded Jeans’ and that’s what I love about this album, Sam brings so many different genres to the forefront of the album. The track feels like more of a pop anthem, with the lyrics about a relationship that’s gone wrong, but still being hung up on your ex.

‘Burnout’ the fifth track on the album gives me Post Malone vibes which definitely isn’t a bad thing! Sam shows off his vocal range in this track especially when the emo pop inspired choruses come into play.

‘Legacy’ is a clever track with the vocoder style vocals starting the track with an anthemic piano throughout. It’s a song that doesn’t really build too much, but the choruses still sound quite euphoric even though there’s a lot less going on throughout the track. Still, easily one of my favourite tracks on the album though!

The last track on the album, ‘Don’t Wanna Be Saved’, stands out the most to me with so many different styles and genres throughout, trap, pop rock styled tracks with a mix of emo pop and pop punk vocals. It definitely has my favourite chorus on the album, from the lyrics to the building guitars and drums that drop into incredible instrumental parts and then back down to sweet sounding verses.

Overall the album keeps you guessing from start to finish and I absolutely love it! Great job Sam! Look forward to hearing more from you in the near future.

We thought Sam’s music fitted in quite well on our playlist ‘Punkio’s Alternative Rock Picks’, especially ‘Don’t Wanna Be Saved’.
