Icarus Phoenix – I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said

Baltimore-based dream pop and shoegaze group Icarus Phoenix have released their fourth studio album, “I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said”, today.

For fans of Slowdive, Flying Colours and The Postal Services.

I’ve already reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed listening to one of the tracks from the album ‘High Tide, which you can read here.

Here’s my thoughts on their album “I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said”.

When confronted with major life changes we find out who we are at our core.

Drew found solace in writing these songs, using them to understand the challenges of a tough breakup and the journey of co-parenting with someone determined to exclude him from his son’s life.

Understanding and empathising with someone who is actively challenging your perspective can be a powerful exercise in practicing empathy and embracing the unpredictable nature of life.

Lead vocalist, Drew Danburry said this about the album.

“To hold firm boundaries but not react in anger is a delicate test of balance and these aren’t lessons that can be taught outside of experience, but my hope is that someone else can relate to and/or understand their own struggles better in experiencing these songs.

The most difficult thing about a separation is how the foundation with which you’ve built your reality becomes water. Rebuilding that foundation of who you are is difficult. Especially when the foundation you’ve relied on in the past is now not only questionable but aggressively warping your reality.”

“I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said” is about the experiences and difficulties that everyone faces in life.

‘Confront the sadness. Learn from it. Become light.’

The album was recorded in Provo, Utah at June Audio with producer Jed Jones, known for his work with artists such as Post Malone and The Killers.

Chaz Prymek from the band Lake Mary and Rocky Cordray from the band Teleprom have added their unique noise and ambience to make this album even more awesome!

Each song shares a powerful tale of Drew’s journey through the challenges of divorce, leaving behind a 13-year marriage, and relocating across the country while leaving his 8-year-old son in the care of his mother.

Based on the lyrics, it’s evident that this song deeply resonates with the listener, which is understandable considering the challenging circumstances it reflects. Life can be tough, and it’s clear that this song captures that sentiment.

I am unable to talk about only one track on this album because every song is exceptional. This album is truly phenomenal and deserves to be thoroughly enjoyed. I have listened to it multiple times while writing this review, and each time had a different experience.

For me “I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said” is an ‘Album Of The Year’ contender and I don’t think there’s going to be many more albums released that can top it!

Share your support by following Icarus Phoenix on their socials and streaming platforms.

We’ve also added ‘The Things You Never Told Me’, one of the tracks from the album onto our Punkio’s Indie Picks playlist.
