Tough Luck – Squidge

The “Big Sad Loud Dumb Punks” known as Squidge have just released their latest EP, ‘Tough Luck.’ This EP reflects how much the band has grown and changed since their start in 2017 and their first release, ‘What’s The Point To Care.’

The EP explores themes like facing obstacles, dealing with imposter syndrome, losing close connections, and struggling to express true feelings. It’s all summed up as just “TOUGH LUCK.”

Initiating with the title track ‘Sad Sack,’ the EP immediately captivates listeners with its polished vocals complemented by the melodious sounds of the guitar. As the chorus strikes, the song transitions into a robust wall of sound, characterized by the crunchy guitars and meticulous production.

Next up, ‘Truck’ takes the stage, its introduction marked by a resonant chorus-struck guitar, leading into a powerful and punchy riff. Drawing influence from bands like Nirvana, Basement, and Turnstile, Squidge skillfully channels the energy and modern sound aesthetic with this track. What really draw’s your attention is the bridge’s call-and-response section, where the interplay between crisp scream vocals and choir-like shouts adds depth to the track’s atmosphere.

With only two tracks remaining, ‘Falling Through the Ceiling’ offers a glimpse into the contemporary shoegaze genre that many listeners desire. The drums assert themselves with vigor, providing a robust foundation for yet another memorable and melodically captivating chorus. The verses are defined by atmospheric verses to temper the track, heightening and building anticipation for the powerful and emotive choruses.

Concluding the EP titled ‘Tough Luck’ is ‘Scumbag,’ which certainly lives up to expectations, providing a fitting conclusion to the musical journey. This track effectively demonstrates Squidge’s versatility in exploring various sounds and genres. The ethereal guitars echo gracefully in the backdrop, complemented by pristine vocals that serve as a guiding force through the emotional narrative. As the final chorus unfolds, listeners are treated to a rich tapestry of sounds enveloping both ears, featuring a striking lead guitar solo and subtle vocal screams hidden within the background.

As a whole ‘Tough Luck’ is an EP you need to listen out for. They’ve put so much time and effort into their work and it surely has paid off.

Go and check them out on all socials and Spotify if you haven’t already and make it worth your while!
